Framing Matters
Framing Matters
Communications Advice with Depth.

Hi I’m Ralph.

I help people improve their communications.

With over 6 years of experience of working on framing and values, and a further 10 years working in the charity sector I can help with both theory and practice.

What I do.

Here are some of the things I can help you with:

Facilitation

I think participation, engagement and group work are the key to successful training. I can provide bespoke workshops on all elements of framing from analysis to message creation. From one day sessions to multi-day programs and ongoing support.

Support and Advice

Applying the theory to practice can be a challenge. I am committed to applying framing insights into real-life situations and will provide tools you can use in your everyday work. I am always available for consultation on projects, comment on material and general support for those I work with.

A bit more about me.

What makes the work I do a little different?

Two key things…

1) I care about what is already in peoples heads - What people already think will determine how effective your message is.

2) I care about all the potential impacts of your work both good and bad - Often when we communicate we accidentally reinforce beliefs and narratives that can undermine our cause. I can help you identify and minimise these unintended consequences.

My Experience.

I have worked with a diverse group of people across many sectors including; environmental and conservation NGOs, development and international issue NGOs, access to medicines campaigners, housing campaigners, university students, government bodies, Gypsy, Roma and Traveller groups, creatives, and human rights campaigners.

I was lucky enough to work with the lovely people at the Public Interest Research Centre for four years, and this is where the majority of my framing knowledge comes from. I still work with them as an external consultant on some of their projects. If you don’t know them, check them out they are awesome.

My NGO experience has been in the conservation sector for 10 years, 8 of them at the RSPB where I worked on policy and campaigning.

Some examples of my work:

I wrote the POSITIVE COMMUNICATION TOOLKIT for Conservation Optimism, this includes the first full iteration of my framing traps approach - that is still in development.

I also authored A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR COMMUNICATING GLOBAL JUSTICE & SOLIDARITY for Health Poverty Action, which looked at some of the framing challenges facing the “development” sector (the name of the sector being one issue).

While still at PIRC I wrote the FRAMING NATURE TOOLKIT which is full of exercises and theory to improve your conservation framing.

Also at PIRC I co-authored COMMON CASUE FOR NATURE with Elena Blackmore. It outlines the importance of values in conservation and environmentalism.

Lastly here is a video of me talking about THE FRAMING TRAPS, which is something I will cover in detail in my workshops.

Random Stuff:

I am a person that always wants to share inspiring things I have seen, read or done. With that in mind check out the amazing documentary “the work”, the brilliant book “There There” and the awesome board game “decrypto”.
